Okura Pet Policy
‘Know where your dog is at all times’
Silvereye / Tauhou nest
Okura is fortunate to border on forest containing high density kiwi populations. In many areas like this, pet ownership would not be allowed. Okura residents have been permitted to have dogs due to having a Pet Policy which is stricter than the standard Far North District Council requirements.
If a resident chooses to have a dog, they are required to have tight control over it so that no roaming is possible.
Where new owners already have additional existing pets, these may be accommodated on application to the Residents Association. Consideration will be given to factors such as: how the pets are confined and controlled, how much of a threat they are to the returning fauna and in particular, to kiwi; and how much nuisance potential they have for other residents, for example from barking.

Native skink live here. They can be differentiated from the plague rainbow skink as this native skink has two plates on the top of its head instead of one.
